For children there are some things you should look for at different stages of development that would be indications of possibility of hearing loss. For very young children, not startling to loud sounds would be one indication. Children should start to babble as well at around six months or so they should be making some clear consonant vowel pairings so bababa, dada, those types of things. Anywhere over six to nine months I believe. If they don't start doing that or if they do it and then it stops, then the child should be evaluated for hearing loss. For older children one of the most common causes of hearing loss in children is middle ear infections. So fluid in behind the ear drum that essentially acts like an ear plug and that is the most common cause of hearing loss in school age children. The signs that your children has fluid that is causing hearing loss would be they run the gamut there is a whole range of things that can occur. The more common signs are behavioral problems in school, struggling in school, not responding, not orienting when you call their name at a fairly close distance, those would be some of the signs to look for.
