"When it actually comes to swimming in white water, there are a couple of different positions that we can use and the defensive swim is definitely a safe zone. For this you want to be on your back, facing downstream with your toes to the surface. If you have your toes to the surface, this ensures they are not going to get snagged on anything at the bottom of the river but you can get folded over in a foot entrapment. Also it means that you can use those feet to absorb the blow of the rock and push yourself up and around. Being on your back allows you to keep your bum as high as possible and use your arms off to the side to control where you are going. It also gives you a good visual of what is coming from downstream and that way you know where you are going. "
