The rumba is said to be an African dance, coming to us by way of Cuba and the slave trade. Yet rumba is often thought of as a Latin dance because of its rich polyrhythms and passionately evocative steps. Whatever the mixture of cultures and influences, rumba is a dance that involves sultry performances of moves that put desire on display and showcase emotion through physical expression. No, it’s not the forbidden dance, but it has been shunned in certain areas of the world at certain times because of its suggestive nature.

"Hi, this is Leslie Sack with expertvillage.com. My website is lesliesack.com and this is Rumba. Rumba’s a Latin dance, it’s one of those slowest Latin dances and I’m going to be showing you just some of the basics. It’s also known as the dance of love, so you want to put on your right attitude when you do your Rumba. There are a couple different ways to do Rumba, there’s American style Rumba and there’s a National style Rumba. I’m going to be teaching you American Style Rumba which is the box step and this is the million dollar box because you can use this as a lot of different dances. So we’re going to start out with the box and then we’re going to teach you some of the other basics. Most important part about Rumba is that you know it’s a spot dance or rhythm dance and it’s not going to move very far so we’re going to be taking little small steps and we’re also going to be moving our hips and that’s what we call a Cuban motion. So let’s get going with the basics. "
