"Okay one of the other basic shooting modes on the Canon 40D is the night portrait mode. In order to get to that mode just take the mode dial on the top of the Canon on the left side, and rotate it until the icon for the night portrait mode is selected and that icon just looks like a little guy with a star to indicate night time. Once that mode is selected what's going to happen is the camera is going to want to let as much light in as possible because it's night time, and the best way to do that is to have a relatively high ISO setting with a very wide aperture up to two or one point eight if you have a really nice lens, and then the shutter speed will probably also be a little slower, but the camera will tell you if it's too dark. The shutter speed will start to blink, but most likely with those three variables, with aperture and ISO and shutter speed, the camera should find a medium somewhere, and of course at night it's always going to be best if you do have a tripod to set up on to shoot your night portraits."
