"Hi this is Tim Gardener with ExpertVillage.com; we’re going to be going over some advanced techniques in football. Alright running effective routes from a receiver’s perspective, the most important thing in running effective routes, number one understanding the defense that you’re facing. You need to know if you’re in a zone or if you’re in man-to-man. If you’re in a zone, you need to find the weakness in the zone and be able to settle within that zone to make a catch; you don’t want to keep crossing because you’re going to cross into trouble. The next thing in man-to-man, if you recognize that you’re in man-to-man, you know what you’ve got to do is get that defender’s hips turned and what we mean by that is simply thing, if you’ve got a defender lined up across you and you’re trying to run a route. If you’re trying to go this way, if this is where your route needs to end up, you’ve got to find someway to get the defender’s hips turned the opposite way and usually that’s done by what we call stemming. So if you’re stemming, if you want to go this way, then I’m going to work this way initially off the line, trying to get the defender’s hips to turn this way. Once I’ve got his hips to start to slightly turn that way, I want to take one more step to get him to commit a little bit more, then I want to roll back as quick as I can the other direction and now I’m one step ahead of him because he’s got his hips turned that way.
