"My name is Ron Gotlin with Biscayne Park Aikido Club in Biscayne Park, Florida. I am the sensei and lead instructor. This technique is called Ushiro Ate. Ushiro is the Japanese word for back or reverse and in this throw, what is happening is the person that is coming forward I am going to grab his shoulders and when I grab his shoulders, the shoulders stop, head stops and the rest of the body keeps coming forward. So in real time what it looks like is as he attacks, attack his shoulders and cause him to fall. Really what is happening is the shoulder stopped in its tracks and the hips and lower body keeps going forward. As James attacks, get out of the way and attack the shoulders. That puts him a precarious position of not being able to keep his feet and hips underneath his head and shoulders and we know that when your head and shoulders are not above your hips and your legs, you create an off-balance. The off-balance is what we look for constantly in the Aikido mode. That is another basic technique in Aikido called Ushiro Ate. Thank you."
