on 11/29/2008 I have a question. How do you get comfortable and unlock your knees. Usually when I start to skate, I'm really nervous and my body locks up slightly. It usually takes an hour before I can get comfortable skating. So how do I get comfortable and unlock my knees sooner?

"Hi, I'm Rahel Cook, on behalf of Expert Village, and today I'm here to talk about how to roller skate, but more importantly going backwards down a hill, or going down a hill forwards, it doesn't really matter. You're not going to run into a hill inside a skating rink so this is specifically for outdoor skating. So, one of the things you need know is, don't be afraid, and it's okay to fall, the fear of falling is often worse than the fall itself. So when you come to a hill, or slight incline, what you need to do is you need to make sure that your knees are not locked, that you're comfortable on your skates, and that you're going at a comfortable speed. The first time that you go down a hill, you need to make sure that you feel comfortable and that you are going slow, slow is always better than fast, when you're first starting out. So, what you need to do is unlock your knees, make sure that you're comfortable, and you can just bear into the incline, just let it go, let gravity take over and just go. If the incline is a little bit higher than you're comfortable with you can use your front stopper to slow you down as you go, being ever so careful to not apply too much pressure to the stopper, otherwise you will stumble. The other method would be to use the T stop method to slow yourself down and let yourself just gently and slowly go down the incline. The other method of going down a hill, and this would be for a much larger hill, would be to slowly turn around, get in a backwards position, make sure that your knees are not locked and that you are comfortable in your stance and then ever so slowly bring your dominate foot behind you and using your front stopper, gently apply pressure while your dominate leg is a few inches behind you, just apply the pressure to the stopper as you're rolling backwards down the hill. This gives you extreme confidence in your stance and it will bring you slowly down the incline. This is how you stop going forwards and backwards."
