"I'm a big proponent of using the right tool for the job. And in the case of road rides longer than half an hour or so, the best tool for the job in my opinion, even as a die-hard mountain biker, is a road bike. What makes a road bike better than a mountain bike for longer road rides is the fact that larger wheels with smaller diameter tires are a lot more efficient. The riding position offers more hand positions -- three hand positions. And it's also a more aerodynamic hand position and just overall body position. So it makes it a lot more pleasant to go riding. The things that are different on a road bike from a mountain bike are -- well, first, your riding position, the way you actuate the shifters is different, uses a different braking system, usually the number of speeds that you have, and the overall gear range that you have is also much smaller than what you have on a mountain bike, because it's designed for a more controlled situation. So those are some of the main differences between a road bike and a mountain bike."
