In the swamps, ponds, and brooks of North America, a keen observer might notice a little creature swimming through the water. Though easily confused as a reptile, these amphibians have slender bodies, short legs, and long tails. While some people immediately think lizard at the sight of salamander, these animals are different from their reptile friends. Salamanders can regenerate lost limbs. Their moist skin draws them to wetter habitats like water or damp dirt. The salamander is very hardy as well. It is thought that the earliest known salamander dates back to 161 million years! While there are a variety of different sizes and colors of salamanders, one of the most common species is the tiger salamander.

Now at first glance, no one really thinks of adopting a salamander as a pet. Tradition tells us to get a dog, cat, or bird.
