" Hi this is Elise McMahon with expertvillage.com and this video series we are going to talking about flea and tick prevention. If you like to find more about my services you can visit my website canineheadstart.com. So we are going to be talking in this short video clip on how you identify different ticks species. One thing you can do is most veterinarian offices you can pick up cards this one wallet size, this one is a little bit larger you can stick it on your refrigerator and it gives you some information about different tick sizes, what they look like and how to identify the ticks. So that is something that is quiet handy that you can pick up so if you can get that from your vet. What I'm going to show you here is some enlarge pictures to help you identify some different species. This one right here is called a lonestar tick and this one right here is a dog tick. Both ticks can carry and transmit different diseases so that is why sometimes important to know which tick you are pulling off your dog. Note with the lonestar tick it is just a small white dot star shape. This one has some white on it but it is much larger being on the mantel of the tick. Then we are going to come down here and look at the female deer tick and this is a picture of a female deer tick and it is taken this is just a corner of a dime. You see a dime so the size of this female deer tick is really no bigger then these two letters in length. You'll notice that the female deer tick has a reddish body and then a darker mantel on the upper surface of the tick. So we are going to take a look here at a male deer tick and again we have a dime here for scale and you can see that the male tick deer tick is a darker in body then the female tick and it is a little bit smaller. Then lower down you take a look at a nymph stage deer stage deer tick yet again it is smaller less in length then the size of this M in the word dime and it has some just mild striation here. So that is one way of taking a look at the ticks the different types of tick and it helps to know what you are pulling off of your dog encase you are worry about any kind of diseases you can follow the symptoms if your dog has any symptoms after taking ticks off your dog."
