Flea & Tick Prevention for Dogs

" Hi my name is Sarah and my name is Haley and we are two of the technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital and on behalf of Expert Village.com we are going to speak with you today a little bit about the care of your dog. Right now what I am going to talk about is flea and tick prevention and I am going to explain the life cycle and why it is very important to prevent both fleas and ticks. With a flea, one flea lays 2,000 legs and they hatch every three weeks. Imagine this little guy right here getting 5 adult fleas on him and then in 3 weeks he is going to have a total of 10,000 fleas on both himself, his environment, your environment and your children’s environment. With the flea prevention which is very important you want to make sure you know you are putting it on once monthly. You want to keep it as a prevention rather than having to treat and then prevent because once you get a flea problem it is really hard to get rid of. The warm dry areas are where fleas like to lay. Vibration is what actually hatches the eggs such as a simple walk from your dog or your children running across the carpet. The number one thing you can do for fleas is keep it as a prevention rather than treatment than prevention so always keep the prevention and you should be safe from fleas. Go to your veterinarian and get approved products and put them on them. You want to try to stay away from the grocery stores because some dogs tend to have some serious reactions to some of those flea approved products. Also is tick prevention. Most people have heard of tick prevention. It can suck your blood; it can suck your dog’s blood and carry diseases such as Lyme disease or lackea . Deer ticks up north is what actually carries the Lyme disease. We don’t have it down south like in Florida but it is definitely a risk. Lackea is a deadly blood disease. It can cause anemia with ticks and you want to make sure he is on flea prevention as well as tick prevention. There are a lot of tick products that actually do the combination of both and if you keep them on his regular schedule of his flea and tick prevention then you won’t have to worry about your home environment or your children’s environment. You know they love and prefer your dog but they will bite you children and bite you as well. That is pretty much it for the flea and tick prevention.
