"On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Carlos Puentes with K-9 Solutions Dog Training in Miami, Florida, and today we're going to talk about dog training myths from my new book, Who's Training Whom? Myth number 9: all you have to do is put one of these collars on the dog, jerk him, and he'll learn. That's crazy. You never want to correct a dog for something he hasn't learned. It's not fair. Never fair to correct a dog for something he hasn't learned. Anybody can show you how to jerk your dog. You put a leash and collar on the dog and you jerk him. It's not just about that, it's about making sure it has meaning to the dog, he's been trained in it. In other words, if he hasn't learned the lesson, "Sit. No!" Well what do you want me to do? No! Why you doing that? It's going to teach the dog just not jerking. That just communicates to him that you're not happy with him and that he has to do it even though he doesn't want to once you've already taught him. Eventually, you don't have to be correcting the dog. Sit. Had he not sat once he's already learned it, that's where you apply a corrective jerk. You never want to do it unless he hasn't learned it. "
