"Moving backwards in a hole is very similar to moving forward in a hole. I still have to keep my upstream edge up, keep looking upstream the entire time no matter how much my boat spins around, my eyes stay up. When I want to move backwards I’ll take a big backstroke and then I can hold it near my toes and have that current come under my boat, hit the backside of my paddle blade and propel me backwards so again, it kind of comes in near your hip, makes a nice vertical back stroke, using your torso muscles, holding it out near your toes and a rudder pushing your way back.
