"The ability for a kayaker to balance on edge is a crucial tool to unleashing a lot of the new powerful play boating moves. A good way to start improving your balance is one with stretching and flexibility. Two is just getting more comfortable with sitting in flat water balancing yourself on edge. Sculling braces work great for this as well. The more I can bring my boat over on its side, the easier it's going to be for me to really slice the end of my boat into the water. A great drill for practicing beginning slicing your boat into the water is the double pump drill. I'm going to leave my paddle vertical around my hip and through torso rotation and a little bit of forward and back leans. I'm going to start rocking my boat on edge on its side. It takes and looks like this. You're just holding the boat on edge and bobbing it forward and back. These really work by again, rotating your torso, having your paddle out from your boat. If you pull in, you're likely to fall over towards your paddle. Again, balance over the top of the kayak for these."
