Warm-Up Stretches for Beginner Gymnastics

    Sibylle, you must understand the following things : 1 - "Warming-up" means "getting warm", that's to say increase the body's temperature. How do you expect your gymnasts to get warm if they spend their time sitting on the floor and stretching ? Stretching is a very different activity, it has nothing to do with warming up, you can't mix everything together. 2 - The short term effect of long stretches (over 10 seconds) is that your muscles loose strength and power for about 1 hour (it has been clearly proved since ages). That goes completely against the gymnastics performance. 3 - No study has never proved that stretching before gymnastics reduces the risk of injuries. You can perfectly start your training without stretching before, at the condition you are really warm. And actually, that's about 10 years my gymnasts don't stretch before trainings, and they are never injured. But they stretch a lot after the training and at home, to benefit from the long term effects of stretching. 4 - From the 3 previous points, you can logically deduct that long stretches before the training are a complete nonsense and should be avoid from the warm-up.
