The advent of the modern automobile tire came in the mid 19th century, which was, oddly enough, some 40 years before the invention of the automobile itself. Scotsman Robert William Thomson is credited with the first patent for an inflatable tire; his invention was used for bicycles in that day. The developments from his prototype paved the way for the rubber, radial tread tires we use on our cars and trucks today.
Tires help our cars operate safely and comfortably on the road. The cushion of air between the road and our bodies is an excellent shock absorber, reducing vibrations from inconsistencies in the pavement and allowing the tire to deform in a fashion favorable for tight maneuvering. Without the tire we have today, life would be vastly different, leaving us to rely perhaps on trolleys and railroads to get us to our destinations.

"RICK GEISSLER: Hi, I'm Rick Geissler, expertvillage.com, coming to you from A&R Tire, talking about how to buy tires. The first thing a person should know when they decide to come in and buy tires is do they really need new tires. When they bring their car in, the first thing we do is tread-depth their tires, check for general cracking, sidewall separations, overall conditions, check for the safety of the tires and really look--ask the customer what they're needs are, what they're concerns are. A tire may appear to be needing to be replaced and it doesn't, or a tire may look like it does not need to be replaced in the customer's eyes and the tire is actually unsafe at that time. Some of the most popular brands of tires in your performance market is definitely the Bridgestone line. Bridgestone builds about 14 different tread designs for different applications of vehicles. From your Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis to your Nissan Altimas, so they bring it in full range and that's one of the major lines we carry. We also carry a secondary line, a mid-range tire, called the Nexen Tire. Nexen has been a very good quality tire. They, again, carry the full-line range. In your off-road market, Bridgestone is very popular, and BF Goodrich of the all-terrain tires are very popular also with high demand. In your tuner market, your Kumhos, your Hankooks, your Falkens, your Nexens are very popular on those markets. So it really depends on what the customer is looking for, what's important to that customer, what their application again, and what they're going to do with the tire. And we try to give them that tire that's going to fit into their price category but along--also going to perform to their expectations."
