"BRIAN FIELDS: Hey, how's it going? I'm Brian Fields here at the Aussie Island in Wilmington, North Carolina. We're here on behalf of Expert Village. I'm here to talk to you about picking out a surfboard and what you can do to help take care of it in the meantime. Okay, talking about leashes. Leashes--very important cause in many parts, it's a law. So, if you don't have your leash, you're going to end up with a fine or ticket. The leash you pick is going to depend on the size of your board. If you're surfing something like a short board, you're probably going to pick something closer to a 6 foot leash. If you're riding a long board, you're going to pick something a little closer to 9 foot leash. The reason in this - if you have something as big as a long board, you want to little more length, 9 feet because if you fall off that board and that board snaps back at you, you don't want your--a little 6 foot leash to snap that board right into you, causing some kind of injury. Whereas, in a smaller board, you can deal with a little bit shorter length of your leash. Leashes also come in different thicknesses. So if you're on a trip somewhere or surfing a bigger wave which is going to be more powerful, you might want a thicker leash, that way, if time calls for it, it's not going to break on you. Their very durable though most--some people actually said you can pull cars with them of all things. So, but a leash is something you need to have for your own safety as well as other people in the water. So it's a must."
