How to Add or Change Search Engines in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Video Preview

Summary: There was a time when using Google or Yahoo or other search engines to look for something on the Internet meant that you had to actually go to their website, i.e., type in www.google.com to enter your search criteria. With MS Internet Explorer 7, you can fly the Internet through your preferred search engine from any web page you are on.

Instructions

    Search Box
    Search Box

With Internet Explore 7 open, look for the rectangular box in the upper right corner. Next to the box are a magnifying glass button and an arrow button.

  2. Step 2
    Drop Down Menu
    Drop Down Menu

Click the down arrow button and a drop menu appears. Your menu may look different than the one shown at the left.

  3. Step 3

To add a different search engine to this list, from the drop down, click on “Find more providers.”

  4. Step 4
    Add Provider
    Add Provider

Click on the search engine you want to add (or create your own). You will be prompted to confirm that you want to add the provider, and are also provided a checkbox to make that provider your default search engine. Click the Add Provider button. You can now add another search engine or move on to Step 5.

  5. Step 5

When you have added all the search engines you want, click the down arrow again to see the listing. The bolded provider’s name is the default search engine, meaning that if you do not change the selection, that search engine will be used.

  6. Step 6
    Change Default
    Change Default

To change the default search engine (or to remove a search engine from the list), with the drop down displayed from the click of the down arrow, click on “Change search defaults”, then click on the desired search engine, and then click the Set Default button (or Remove button) before clicking on OK.

  7. Step 7
    Select Provider
    Select Provider

To find something on the Internet using your default search engine, type your search request in the rectangle box and then click the magnifying glass or press enter. If you want to try a different search engine, after entering your search criteria, click the down arrow, and then click on the search engine of your choice. That search engine will remain active until you change it or exit Internet Explorer.
