  1. Step 1

A very important part of housetraining is keeping a constant eye on your dog. When you can't watch your dog, you should confine your dog to a crate. When your dog is out of the crate, you should keep a very close watch over your dog. A leash can help you accomplish this.

  2. Step 2

Attach a leash to your dog's collar. Tie or clip the other end of the leash to your belt or belt loop.

  3. Step 3

This is often referred to as umbilical cord training and it is very useful for dogs that are having a difficult time with the housetraining.

  4. Step 4

With your dog attached to you, your dog has to follow you from room to room. If your dog starts to squat or lift their leg, you are in the perfect position to interrupt your dog and bring her right outside.

  5. Step 5

Once you are outside, you are still there with your dog to reward your dog for eliminating in the right place. A lot of dog owners make the mistake of letting their dogs out without them. If you are not there with your dog, you don't have the opportunity to reward your dog for going in the proper place.

  6. Step 6

Umbilical cord training is also great for dogs that have chewing problems.
