I am Dr. Jeffrey Levy, house call vet at NYC. And this is why do cats roll over on their backs? My clients often ask me why does my cat roll on it's back? Well cats are interesting and interested creatures. They enjoy viewing the world with different perspectives. Austi my friend loves sitting on a cat tree and looking down on the world. He also enjoys laying on the floor in a paper bag and looking up at the world. So why not look from upside down. Cats enjoy variations in their environment. They're intelligent creatures and enjoy variability. But there's probably other reasons. Cats enjoy the endorphins surge of those feel good chemicals when they have a good stretch. In addition, they're inviting play. By rolling on their backs they're exposing their bellies which is a submissive posture in the face of a predator. What better way to make friends with your owner. So when you cat rolls on its back please enjoy it and think of the reasons we've talked about.
