I am Dr. Jeffrey Levy, house call vet, NYC and this is what are weird things cats eat. Our feline friends are capable of eating the most extraordinary objects. As a practicing veterinarian I have seen an incredible variety of inanimate objects ingested by our feline friends ranging from toothpicks, rubber bands, needle and thread, pine cones, pine needles, Christmas tree tinsel, particles of dust, toothpicks, plastic objects, you name it. Even though some of these objects appear to be of an amusing nature they can have deadly consequences. A major problem can occur when a cat ingests needle or thread. This is called a linear foreign body that can cause damage to the cat's internal organs that can require X-rays and even surgery. If you have a cat who has this naughty tendency, your best course of action is to separate these objects from your kitty. Make sure there are no rubber bands, strings, needles or other small objects your cat could potentially ingest. If you see your cat acting in an odd and unusual way, perhaps vomiting or having an inability to defecate or pawing at its face or mouth, this is immediate cause for concern and you should contact your veterinary immediately for a consult.
