Hi, I'm Xtah and this is testing the strength of your hair with a nail or a pencil. All in all I actually prefer to use a finger but you can use a nail or a pencil, you just want to take one single strand and wrap it around either the finger, the nail or the pencil. With the pencil or the nail you want to make sure you just have a little bit of a give to it when you pull onto the hair to make it tight around that implement, it should have a little bit of elasticity to show the strength but when you use like a finger, then you just need to make sure you have a little bit of a demarcation where the hair is because you know how your finger turns from like a pinkish to a whitish when you take away a little bit of that blood supply, that's what you are looking for with your finger.
