Hi I'm Kate Leser, the makeover expert. I'm here in Raleigh, North Carolina at The Art of Style. Today's topic is patterns not to wear with plaid. Mixing patterns together creates a nice visual interest for any outfit. And it's always good to do but there are several rules to follow when doing this. There really isn't any pattern that doesn't go with plaid. But there are a few things that you need to keep in mind when working with mixing patterns like a plaid. For instance, the number one rule is you need to stay in the same color family. So right here we have a gray Glen plaid jacket, ok. And we have a burgundy top that, burgundy shirt that goes with this jacket. But if you're going to add a checker bow tie, do you see this brown, this doesn't look very nicely. It doesn't have a nice harmony. So this would be fighting it and you would say, oh that really doesn't go. So you would need to choose other colors that fall in this family. For instance, we have this houndstooth tie. And this compliments the burgundy and the grey as well. So this flows better. So you can see how this flows better then this color and this plaid. So you want to stay in the same color family. And then the other rule to keep in mind is one has to be more dominant then the other. One pattern has to be more dominant. So for instance this plaid jacket here is not very dominant. So anything that we put up against it will be more dominant. It will draw the attention right to that item. So let me give you another example of where it doesn't work. Here's another one that the color family is not working here. Although this pattern is more dominant but the color family doesn't work. So that would not be a good look. Instead we want to remain in the color family. So that is your biggest number one rule. Stay in the color family and have one pattern more dominant then the other.
