Hi, this is Olga Gonzalez, and this is how to tell a real amethyst. If you’re shopping for amethysts, you may wonder, “How can I tell if it’s real or not?” The way a gemologist tells when amethyst is real is by testing the refractive index, also known as the RI of an amethyst. Using a refractometer, you can test for the maximum and minimum RI. You also want to look for the birefringence, which is the difference in the values between the maximum and the minimum RI. The RI of amethyst is 1.54 to 1.56, and the birefringence is .009.
