How to Change From Bing to Google

By Nick Davis

Internet Explorer, by default, is set to perform searches using Bing instead of another search engine like Yahoo, Excite, Dogpile or Google. You don’t have to keep Bing as your default search engine, and you can change it to Google as well as change the search engine back to Bing, if desired. The search engine setting is within IE’s “Manage add-ons” component. Once the change is made, you don’t have to restart your browser to begin using Google as your default search engine.

Step 1

Click on the gear icon in IE’s upper right-hand corner to access the browser’s Tools menu. Click “Mange add-ons” and then “Search Providers.” A list of available search engines appears with Bing at the top of the list.

Step 2

Click the “Find more search providers” link at the bottom of the dialog box. Internet Explorer Gallery launches. Click on “Google Search,” and then click the “Add to Internet Explorer” button. The “Add Search Provider” dialog box opens.

Step 3

Click the check box next to “Make this my default search provider.” Click the “Add” button to finalize the setting. Close the Internet Explorer Gallery window.

Step 4

Return to the “Manage Add-ons” dialog box and click “Search Providers” again to refresh the list of search engines. Click on “Google” and click the “Move up” link next to “Listing order:” to make Google the first search engine in the listing.

Step 5

Click the “Close” button to save the settings. Google is now your default IE search engine.
