Hi, my name is Karen Lee. I'm a certified financial planner, the owner of Karen Lee and Associates and a registered representative with LPL Financial. Today, we'd like to answer the question what does maternity insurance cover. Maternity coverages is a benefit of some health insurance policies. There is no such thing as a stand alone maternity insurance. So the first question is does your health insurance policy cover maternity benefits. If it does, it's typically going to cover all your prenatal care, your delivery and any complications that arise from that. Your prenatal care will include regular visits to your doctor, possibly ultrasounds, blood work, anything else that the doctor might require. Now what's going to vary from one policy to another is whether or not that all is covered 100% by the insurance company or if you still have to pay a copay, some of your deductible or any co-insurance but typically all those appointments are covered in some capacity. Next you're going to have your actual hospitalization. Most maternity will cover full hospitalization, the full cost of both a C-section or natural delivery and again when I say full coverage, it depends on if your policy has a deductible and a coinsurance amount. So you will still have to satisfy your deductible and possibly pay for a portion of the coverage but all the procedures are still eligible for coverage. If during your delivery you had a complication with your pregnancy, your policy will most likely cover the additional hospital stay and procedures that are required. Hopefully that answers all your questions about what maternity insurance does cover. The most important thing is to know your own coverage inside and out because they very much vary from one company to another. My name is Karen Lee. I'm a certified financial planner, the owner of Karen Lee and Associates and a registered representative with LPL Financial.
