Hi, I'm Denise Druce a fitness instructor in Salt Lake City, Utah. Let's look at which bike most effectively works glutes and hamstrings. The answer to this question is, any bike works your glutes and hamstrings. The actual motion of pedaling is a pushing forward motion. So anytime you do that motion you're engaging the muscles in the back of the body as well as the quadriceps. This motion coming over the top of the pedal stroke is hip extension and hip extension we use a lot of the glutes and the hamstrings. An upright bike is a little bit different than a recumbent bike in that your recumbent bike you're pushing forward more and in an upright bike you're pushing down a little bit more, but they still both use a lot of hip extension. So what ever bike you're pedaling know that you're getting a great lower body workout. If you really want to make sure you hit your glutes and your hamstrings though, when you get off the bike do some basic squats or lunges with light weights in your hands, anything with hip extension will help tone those muscles even more.
