Hello, I'm Dr. Cindy Roark, chief clinical director of Coast Dental. If you want a brighter, whiter smile, you can start by heading to your refrigerator. Crunchy fruits and vegetables like carrots, celery and apples are natural teeth whiteners. They increase saliva which washes away cavity causing bacteria. Strawberries are another good choice. They have an enzyme called malic acid that studies show can whiten teeth. However, you need to brush your teeth well after eating strawberries because they contain natural sugar which could lead to cavities if not washed away. Another lesser known option is calamansi which is a popular citrus fruit in the Philippines. Like other types of citrus fruit, it contains Vitamin C which helps prevent dental decay and boosts the body's natural immune system. However, while Vitamin C helps teeth, the acids in citrus fruit do not. You should rinse with water and brush your teeth after eating calamansi, limes, lemons, oranges or even tomatoes so the juice doesn't sit on your teeth and potentially lead to cavities and remember, while items like these fruits and vegetables may help whiten your teeth, other items in your kitchen can stain your teeth, coffee, red wine, even purple grape juice get into the pores of your teeth and make them look darker. Rinsing with water or brushing your teeth after drinking these kinds of beverages will help your smile stay whiter longer. Thank you for watching. I'm Dr. Cindy Roark with Coast Dental.
