Hey, guys. It's Faith Dey, and I'm at Princeton Club West in Madison, Wisconsin, and we're talking about how to keep your back straight when doing a squat. Now, usually when we do squats, I see a lot of clients curving their spine and you want to keep your spine as neutral as possible. So, that means keeping your abs engaged. Now, there's a couple of different ways you can do this. If you're at home, use a broomstick or if you're at the gym, maybe use an exercise bar. Now, if I take that bar and place it by my collarbone or the front of my shoulders, that may help me keep my back straight while I engage my core so that I don't over-arch my lower back as I do my squat. If I don't have those tools, maybe I have an exercise ball. And a great way to keep your spine straight is to take that ball and roll it along a wall while doing your squat. It takes your body in a little different position, but it's a great way to keep your spine straight. Try those two exercises both ways and see how your abs feel in both exercises.
