Hi, I'm Jennifer Mull from Backwoods in Austin, Texas. Today we're here to talk about how to use a trekking pole. So the first thing you do when you start to use a trekking pole is you come up from underneath the handle, slide your hand through and come down on top of the band. That will secure your hand to the pole and allow you to begin walking. You want to have basically a 90 degree angle on your elbow so that it will be comfortable and also provide the most stability while you're walking. So you will walk, you'll just swing your arms normal pace. You don't want any exaggerated motion and when you are going downhill you'll want to make sure that the pole is long enough. You may actually have to lengthen the pole. You can lengthen it depending on the type of pole you have. Sometimes it's a screw mechanism, sometimes it's a flip mechanism but you'll want to lengthen the pole on down slope and when you're going uphill you want to actually shorten the pole to provide the best swing.
