As an employer of a childcare facility, your first priority is the safety and well being of the children in your care. There's no room for compromise, there's no room for negotiation. Therefore, you have to perform a criminal and financial background check. You can't afford to have any surprises. But that's not enough, you also have to do a Google search. Find out how they present themselves publicly, meaning Facebook, Twitter and any blogging they might do. If there's a problem, if there are any concerns during the interview ask them about them. Give them a chance to explain. It's also an excellent opportunity for you to judge how they deal with criticism. If they become defensive, you may want to pass on them. During the interview focus on examples of when the candidate had to deal with difficult situations. That's key, whether it be with the children or sometimes more importantly with their parents and then check references and confirm everything they've told you. Do not forget to check references.
