Welcome, this is HR That Works, President, Don Phin and today I'm going to answer the question how do we get employees to play like a team and the first thing to understand let's think about teams. All teams that you know they have a brand, you know it's the New York Yankees, it's the Boston Red Sox, they have a brand. So brand your team. I remember working with an oil and gas company and everybody wore shirts, we give you the gas. So they had fun branding the team. I worked with one employer that had landscapers, they bought them all soccer shirts with the company's brand on it. So teams get branded. I love Affinity clothing, just don't get cheap Affinity clothing okay? Don't buy the cheapest shirt you can buy, buy the best shirt you can buy and think of the value that that shirt represents both to that employee's performance and to the public out front. Second things teams do is they compete. You know, Joe Torry the famous manager of the Yankees, he asked if great players, a great team produces winning and he said no, winning produces great teams. And so you've got to compete. The place we want to compete is not internally. Alfred Cohen wrote a great book about the case against competition, you've got to compete against them, so find an enemy, find somebody to compete against. The Yankees have got the Boston Red Sox, who do you have? Who is your number one competitor, Avis, we try harder, we're number two, we try harder. Find somebody that you can compete against to develop teamwork and then what you want to do is you want to reward team effort as the saying goes, a rising tide floats all boats. So for example when you're giving bonuses out, base them on team effort to a certain degree. You know, somebody is doing something together, none of us is an island at any company so reward on a team basis and you'll get team play. So remember, brand them, get somebody to compete against and reward the effort. Hope that helps and that you played better team. Take care.
