Welcome, this is HR That Works, President Don Phin, and today I'm going to answer the question what are the different roles that HR plays in an organization and it's basically for them okay? The first role they play is an administrative one so they might run payroll or benefits. They're basically managing data, that's an administrative aspect of HR. In larger companies you might have a separate administrator, at a small company you're worrying a bunch of hats and you're going to have the administrative hat. The second role is to deal with compliance so we have to make sure we don't get sued, we have to make sure we do sexual harrassment training, know how to manage ADA leaves, FMLA leaves, make sure we don't have people misclassified as exempt versus non-exempt or an independent contract versus employee. Those are probably the biggest issues that show up in that arena. The third thing is to make sure you bring in good HR practices, hiring the right people, you know half of companies hire better than the other half which company are you at? You know, you do train them so they get any better, getting them to play the team, getting rid of the losers and of course again making sure you don't get sued by those losers when you get rid of them and the last thing that HR does is they have almost kind of a cheerleader role. You get stuck kind of a little bit between the executive team and the rank and file and you're put in the middle. What you really want to do is help them to communicate better because if you don't you're going to be dealing in the middle of their battles all the time. So how can you increase the flow of communication, how can you in a sense be a cheerleader for the organization, those are your essential four roles in the company. Now some very big companies they'll have four different people handling those roles. If you had a small company guess what, you've got all four of them. Hope that helped. Take care.
