Welcome. This is HR That Works President Don Phin and today, I'm going to answer the question, things to do as a Human Resource Manager or Department Director. Now, the first thing that I teach everybody when it comes to being great at HR, it's an inside out job. How good you want to be at it? Do you see an opportunity in HR? Are you excited about it? Are you reading the things you're supposed to be reading, doing the things you're supposed to be doing? So, it's an inside out job first. But, assuming that you really want to go for it, you really see the opportunity in HR, then the question is, "What are the companies needs?" Now, generically, having done workshops in more than 250 CEOs around the United States, they tell me in order their top seven concerns and number one, hiring people you can trust. You know, Jim Collins books Good To Great and all his other books, he's talks about getting the right person on every seat at the bus is the single most important thing you can do in a company and whose better position to do that than HR. Number two, in this squeeze economy where in right now, productivity is so important. I've got somebody who I can trust, now, get busy. So, what performance management techniques have you brought into the company that actually improve that performance. The number three concern is your attention. I've got somebody I can trust, that's performing for me, that making me money; now, I want to keep them on board, so how well you do your attention practices. The number four concern is training because in a knowledge economy like we're in today, you have to learn more to earn more, you have to train more to learn more; so, how much training do you go through. The number five concern is getting people to play like a team. The number six concern is getting rid of the dead weight, the losers; you know, how do you call the herd on a regular basis. And not 'till number seven, to, do business owners worry about getting sued by those employees. You know, the most important concerns are the ones at your company. So, you're going to want to do things like audits and surveys and most importantly, interview the executive team so you can find out from them what you're doing right now and you can do better.
