Hi, I'm Doug Levi, principal agent and owner of Strategic Insurance Services and today I'm going to talk to you about how does the insurance underwriting process work. Well the first place the process starts is typically with your agent, and it's typically with an application. Almost all insurance requires you to take an application. The agent or the carrier is going to gather a whole bunch of info from you. If it's life or health insurance, obviously they're going to talk about medical history, your current health, do you smoke, do you take any medications, so those are all things to be prepared for. If it's homeowners or auto insurance, they're probably going to ask you about past claims. From there the process is going to go, typically to the carrier, so to the actual insurance company. On the other end there, at the insurance company, is where an underwriter is actually going to look at the information that's been gathered, whether you've done that online, whether you've done a paper application or whether you've called it in to the phone. One thing to keep in mind is that the underwriting process can take some time depending on the type of policy you're looking for. For example life insurance. The policy process there to be underwritten can take anywhere from two to six weeks. And two weeks is really an incredibly fast process for it all to occur. So keep in mind that you might need to give yourself more time. Don't try and do something at the last minute. This is how does the insurance underwriting process work. You can get more information on a variety of subjects on insurance at our website,, and I'm Doug Levi with Strategic Insurance Services.
