"We tend to treat our skin as if it is a shell when it is, in fact, a living, breathing organ," says certified makeup artist Nicole Lundy. The skin isn't just another organ, though, she reminds us. Unlike our other organs, skin is exposed to the environment on a daily basis. The steps we take to protect and nourish our skin become increasingly apparent as time passes. In addition to eating well and keeping the sun off your skin, use beauty products that help nourish and protect your skin.

Sheer Coverage Moisturizer

If you have relatively problem-free skin, a multitasking moisturizer is your best option in terms of coverage. Not only will a sheer coverage moisturizer even out skin tone and conceal blemishes, it'll keep your skin dewy, plump and healthy looking. BB creams -- or beauty balms -- are especially beloved because they act as a primer, SPF, moisturizer and coverage product all in one.

Those who battle acne and need more than sheer coverage should opt for a thicker foundation that contains acne-fighting ingredients. Look for oil-free products that contain salicylic acid and soothing ingredients such as vitamin E and aloe. Acne-fighting concealers are also available for spot treating.

You should never leave the house without proper SPF coverage -- even if you're outside for only a brief moment. Combine beauty and sun protection with an SPF powder, which sets makeup, absorbs oil and evens out skin tone. Aim for at least SPF 10.

Peeling skin around the nails is not only embarrassing -- it's painful. It's often the result of lack of moisture and exposure to harmful elements (over-washing is particularly to blame). Using a cuticle cream and/or nail moisturizer improves the appearance of the skin around your nails and soothes them. Choose products rich in moisturizing ingredients, such as vitamins E and C and natural oils/butters.

A soothing face mask can do more than put you at ease after a long day -- or week -- of work. Lundy suggests using a detoxifying mask at least once weekly, which helps rid the skin of impurities to create a natural, healthy glow. "If you live in a big city such as New York City," she says, "use a detoxing mask twice per week."

Not everyone's blessed with long, dramatic eyelashes. While mascara is always a quick fix -- they can amp up the volume by three times -- you may want to consider one of science's latest breakthroughs: lash-growing products. Available both in prescription and over-the-counter varieties, lash-growing mascaras and serums stimulate growth and can make eyelashes thicker and longer.

Mineral Makeup

There's a reason mineral makeup hit the beauty scene with such impact: It's easy to work with, makes you look beautiful and nourishes your skin. Always check the ingredients, but most mineral, loose powder cosmetics are free of parabens, dyes and preservatives. They also include ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which may serve as natural protection against the sun and elements. Mineral makeup is particularly recommended for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Tinted Lip Balm

Your lips should never be naked, even if you prefer their natural hue. Lip balm protects lips from the sun, moisturizes and helps them retain water/fullness. A tinted lip balm is ideal if you want both a little color and max coverage. Choose a product with at least SPF 10 and ingredients such as aloe, shea and cocoa butter.
