What are you expecting to receive this Valentine's Day? Chocolates? Flowers? A fledgling romance? Yawn. We've all been there, done that. We've had enough boring dates and leftover candies. This Valentine's Day, instead of buying Mr. or Ms. "Right Now" something kitschy and unmemorable, celebrate a different kind of love. Celebrate the long-lasting love of great girlfriends, by making your besties an especially memorable DIY gift.

Friendship Bracelets

Forget about the matching “Best Friend” charms from your playground days, these are the future of friendship bracelets. Just grab an outfit that’s been collecting dust in the back of your closet, snip the zip (and hold it over a lighter to prevent fraying), add a charm and you’re set. Reduce, reuse, recycle ... and remind your friends how much you love them.

Salt Dough Necklace

Remember making “salt dough” ornaments when you were younger? While we’ve grown out of making deformed ginger bread people, we’re still totally awed by this miracle mix. Using ingredients that are probably in your kitchen cupboard (two parts flour, one part salt and enough water to make the mixture the consistency of Play-Doh), you can make a similar looking necklace in seconds -- just don’t forget that it has to bake for two hours at 275-degrees Fahrenheit before you can paint it. As you can see, we clearly like metallic spray paint.

Salt Dough Earrings

Ladies, tie your hair back -- it’s time to pull the glue out and get your glitter on. We know how much you love sparkly things (diamonds, sequins, Edward Cullen...), but all too often, such glitzy accessories cost an arm and a leg (Swarovski, we’re looking at you). Since we can't afford all the best goodies, we’re going to shamelessly guild our own earrings with these salt dough earrings. You can find a host of jewelry backs and fixings at your local craft store.

Thumb Print Necklace

Every girl needs that “statement piece,” and we love that this one is so sentimental. Using either salt dough or crafting clay, and a spray paint of your choice, make thumbprint necklaces for your friends this Valentine’s Day. All you'll need is a chain from your favorite thrift store to complete this pretty pendant.

Cookie Cutter Earrings

We know that everything goes into “heart overload” this time of year, but we really do have a soft spot for these anatomically incorrect symbols of love. Dainty, clay-made, cookie cutter earrings are sweet (without being sappy) and sophisticated enough to be worn all year round. Use a clay tool or knife to carve a custom shape in your salt dough.

Washer Necklace

One man’s washer is another girl’s treasure. Don’t underestimate the gems that are sitting in your tool box. With a little paint and a pretty chain, you can turn IKEA leftovers into a simple, chic accessory.

Macramé Necklace

You know what you and your BFF have in common with macramé? You’re both woven together (cue the “aww”). And macramé, like your friendship, really won’t go out of style (we’re on a roll here).

Infinity Scarf

Infinity Scarf

You love her to infinity and beyond, right? So show off your unending friendship with a braided infinity scarf. Some sewing skills are necessary, but if you can sew a straight seam, this will be a piece of cake. (P.S. We heard a similar scarf is going for $40 online -- make this yourself and you'll have $40 for a girl’s night out.)

Tank Top Purse

For the girlfriend who’s always on the go, sew up a “tank top tote.” All you need is a shirt, some scissors and one quick seam, and voila -- it’s her yoga/grocery/school bag all in one.

Jewelry Tray

Nothing says “I love you,” like a heart shaped jewelry tray, right? OK, that might be a bit of a stretch, but how nice is it to keep track of all those earring backs? She’ll think of you every morning as she thanks you for saving her a few extra seconds crawling along the bathroom floor, looking for that misplaced ring.

Friends don’t let friends live with unorganized accessories. With a little love and a staple gun, you can arm your best friends against the dreaded “jewelry junk drawer.” Just grab some of her favorite fabric (what color is her bedroom/bathroom?), staple gun it to a piece of scrap wood, add some hooks, maybe a little ribbon, and now she’s free to accessorize in seconds -- good-bye knotted necklaces! (While you’ve got the staple gun out, you might as well make a matching one for yourself … yes? We think so. Love yourself, too, this Valentine’s Day).
