When hiring help for your home, you'll need to ask the candidates some questions to assess their qualifications for the job. You may want to rate the answers on a scale so that you can compare candidates with similar skill sets, allowing you to make an informed decision on the best hire.

Initial Screening

  • Before even interviewing candidates, you should look at the applications to determine if they're qualified for the job. Then, you should call suitable applicants and check for necessary certifications, training and references. Call the references to verify claims the candidates make about their experience.


  • While interviewing multiple candidates, you should create a list of criteria. There is not necessarily a right or wrong answer for this question, but you should determine if you feel comfortable with this applicant after receiving the answer.

Salary Questions

  • You may have a maximum wage that you are willing to pay your help. However, if you're interested in saving money, you can ask candidates what they would like to be paid. They may be willing to work for a lower wage than you expected.

Job Related Questions

  • You should also ask specific questions related to the job that a worker will perform. For example, if you're hiring a gardener, you should ask what chemicals would be used in the garden to combat pests and fertilize plants. This question will not only let you know how the applicant will approach the job, but also help you determine if the applicant really knows how to carry out the job. When hiring a caregiver for an elderly family member or child, you will want to take the care-receiver's preferences into consideration. You will also want to perform a criminal background check on the caregiver applicant.


  • Homeowners will want to ask questions related to insurance coverage or bonding, if necessary. Some home helpers, such as house cleaners, have insurance that covers damage they do.
