Attachment Methods for Foam Board Insulation

Save

Foam board insulation sheets provide good insulation for your home, especially in your basement. Foam board insulation is lightweight and is easy to handle and install using nails, tape or adhesives. According to Energy TechPro, foam board insulation offers the highest R-value per inch of any insulation type.

Nailing

  • Nail your foam board insulation using plastic-head nails. The plastic heads help the nail stay attached to the outside of the foam board insulation, rather than sinking into it, according to the Hammerzone.com website. These nails will provide superior hold and you can install them using a regular hammer.

Taping

  • Foam board insulation can also be attached with special tape, such as Tyvek tape, duct tape or foil tape. Tape will stick to foam board insulation and helps to seal the seams as well.

Adhesives

  • You can also attach your foam board insulation using a water-based adhesive. According to home improvement expert Jon Eakes, you should use an adhesive for your foam board that does not contain solvents that can eat away at the insulation board. Choose an adhesive such as PL300 Foam Board Adhesive or Liquid Nails foam board adhesive.
