Kawasaki 550 LTD Specs


The Kawasaki 550 LTD motorcycle was produced from 1979 to 1985. Other designated model numbers were KZ500, Z550 and ZX550. In South Africa, it was known as the Kawasaki 550 Zephyr.


  • Displacement was pegged at 553 cc for the in-line four, four-stroke, air-cooled engine. Compression was 9.5-to-1, accompanied by a bore and stroke of 58.0 x 52.4 mm. Two valves per cylinder, dual overhead camshafts and an air cooling method rounded out the entire system. Idle speed for this Kawasaki was set at the factory to range from 1,150 to 1,250 rpm. It had a six-speed gearbox transmission that employed a chain final drive. All of these components enabled the Kawasaki 550 to put out approximately 50 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. Top speed for this model was 110.6 mph .

Tires and Brakes

  • It had dual disc breaking power in the front, and expanding brakes in the rear. Ideally, the front tire should be inflated up to 25 psi, and the back tire should read about 28 psi.

Dimensions and Capacity

  • This motorcycle weighed 465.2 pounds with a full tank of gas and a topped-up oil reservoir. Its fuel capacity was 3.43 gallons. As for the motor oil, maximum mechanical efficiency was achieved with SAE 10W-40, 10W-50, 20W-40 and 20W-50, rated at SE or higher. The 550 can accommodate one operator with a single passenger and minor cargo.
