Cobalt SS Supercharged Oil Specs

Any time an oil change is performed, it's important to follow the exact guidelines from the manufacturer. When working with a high-performance vehicle, such as the Cobalt SS, this becomes even more important. This vehicle is often driven near the maximum output capacities of its engine and needs proper lubrication to run correctly for years to come. In the owner's manual, Chevrolet outlines the weight, quality, brand and amount of oil to use.

  • Multi-viscosity oils have two weight indications: cold and hot. The first rating is the cold weight, and the lower this number is, the faster it can be delivered on initial start-up. The second rating is at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the higher this number, the better it lubricates when hot. Chevrolet recommends 5W30 motor oil for the supercharged Cobalt SS.

  • There are two minimum standards that Chevrolet sets for the Cobalt SS oil. The requirements are an oil that meets or exceeds General Motor's standard, GM4718M, and one that is certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). These designations can be found on the rear of the oil bottle's label.

  • Chevrolet even recommends a specific brand of oil. The automaker recommends Mobil 1 synthetic, but any equivalent is acceptable.

  • Every vehicle has a specified amount of oil required. The Cobalt SS requires six quarts of oil to fill both the engine and the oil filter.
