List of Alternative Lifestyles

Alternative lifestyles are often associated with sexual preferences, but the term can also refer to other lifestyles outside society's norms, such as eating only a vegan diet or dressing in a certain way. Some choose to live alternative lifestyles because of a conscious choice they made. Others believe they were born into an alternative lifestyle; it is the only way of life that feels natural and comfortable for them.

Asexuality

  • Asexuality is an uncommon sexual orientation often confused with celibacy, the conscious decision to abstain from sexual activity. Asexuality is different, however, because asexual people usually don't feel sexual arousal, or the urge to have sexual relations with other people. Many feel emotional attraction and the desire to get close to another person, but don't feel the need to act sexually on that attraction. Like most homosexuals, bisexuals and heterosexuals, most asexuals feel that they were born into their orientation.

Veganism

  • Veganism is a dietary lifestyle choice that people adopt for various religious, ethical and health reasons. While vegetarians choose not to consume any meat, fish or poultry, vegans avoid all animal products, including eggs, dairy and sometimes honey. By eating a variety of foods such as chickpeas, nuts, beans, soy products, leafy greens, vegetables and fruit, as well as taking vitamin B12 supplements, vegans can get a full supply of protein, calcium, Omega-3 fatty acids and other important vitamins and minerals. A balanced vegan diet is lower in fat and cholesterol than vegetarian or omnivorous diets.

Furry Fandom

  • Furry fandom is an alternative lifestyle and community in which individuals identify with animals, especially a particular animal, and exhibit characteristics or dress as the animal. Many "furries" even refer to themselves as a member of an animal species. Since furries are often few and far between, the community holds conventions, the biggest of which is the annual ConFURence in California, where furries can meet each other and are given a safe space to act like animals.
