Hairstyles for Women 35 or Older

Women over the age of 35, do not need to cut their hair super short to create a more mature look. There are a number of ways you can style your hair to create a look that is both modern and appropriate for your age. Longer, youthful styles have become popular and accepted for women over 35, and you can achieve these styles yourself or with the help of a stylist.

Layered Hair

  • Layers add body and bounce to the hair, making thin hair appear thicker, and they allow you to create an everyday hairstyle that is casual yet fashionable. To create the style, ask your stylist to incorporate layers into your cut. Wash the hair and apply a heat-protectant serum, evenly coating the hair. Blow dry the hair using a round brush, pulling it up and away from the face. Tease the hair at the crown and smooth it over. Use a curling iron to create soft curls in the hair, curling it away from the face and slightly flipping the ends either over or under. Apply a semi-waxy texturizing cream to the hair, further defining the layers. Top the hair off with a shine-enhancing serum. The finished look is soft, sleek and styled.

Medium-Long Wavy Hair

  • Being over 35 does not mean you have to cut your hair short and give up the wavy styles of your youth. In fact, many female celebrities over 35 are often photographed sporting medium to long waves, and the style has become quite fashionable for both everyday wear and formal occasions. To create the look, wash your hair and dry it with a diffuser. Using a flat iron, smooth and curl 1-inch sections of hair at a time. Starting close to the roots, clamp the first 1-inch section of hair in the flat iron and pull the iron down, smoothing the top of the hair. Begin twisting the flat iron away from the face about half-way down the hair shaft to create subtle waves, following the natural wave of your hair. Tease the hair at the top of the head to create lift. Apply a styling cream to the hair, slightly separating and defining the waves with your fingers. Top the hair off with a shine-enhancing serum.

Medium Bob

  • A medium-length bob is an appropriate style for women over 35. It is also the perfect hairstyle for hair that is transitioning from short to long or long to short. To create this hairstyle, the stylist cuts the hair just above the shoulders, cutting it slightly shorter in the back, tapering it to longer locks in the front. She adds soft layers to the hair and cuts bangs at an angle, side-sweeping them across the forehead. The stylist washes and dries the hair using a large, round brush to create volume. She parts the hair on the side and teases it slightly at the crown. She curls the ends under and applies a shine-enhancing serum evenly to the hair. If desired, the hair can be flipped up at the ends to create a shaggy bob style.
