Standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation specify that a compact car has an interior passenger and cargo volume of no more than 109 cubic feet. Most American and foreign automobile manufacturers offer at least one compact car in their line-up of vehicles, including some that are especially small or sub-compact. These vehicles are typically among the lowest-priced vehicles produced by their respective manufacturers and tend to offer high average gas mileages due to their small size.
The American company Chevrolet manufactures the Aveo, which it first released for the 2004 model year. The 2011 Aveo comes in both a four-door sedan and a four-door hatchback model, the latter of which is known as the Aveo5, indicating the presence of the fifth door on the rear of the vehicle. Both types receive an average fuel economy of 35 mpg on highways and have 91.0 cubic feet of total interior space. The hatchback model had a suggested starting retail price of $12,115 as of October 2010, while the sedan starts at $11,965.
The Korean car company Hyundai debuted its small compact, the Accent, in 1995, and for the 2011 model year, manufactured the car in both a four-door sedan and two-door hatchback models. The car has an average fuel economy of 36 mpg on highways and comes with Hyundai's standard warranty that covers the vehicle's engine and other parts of the powertrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Both models of the Accent have 92 cubic feet of total interior volume. The 2011 Hynundai Accent hatchback had a starting price of $9,985 as of October 2010, while the sedan started at $13,695.
Japanese manufacturer Toyota introduced the Yaris in 2007. The 2011 Yaris comes in three models: a two-door with a hatchback, a four-door with a hatchback and a four-door sedan. The Yaris receives an average of 35 to 36 mpg, depending on the model. The interior volume of the Yaris also varies from model to model and ranged from 97 to 100 cubic feet, with the sedan providing the most room. The prices for the two- and four-door hatchbacks and the sedan models of the 2011 Yaris were $12,855, $13,155 and $13,615, respectively, as of October 2010. The Toyota vehicle comes with a roadside assistance package from the manufacturer.
American car manufacturer Ford released its compact, the Fiesta, for the first time for the 2011 model year. Ford previously had success offering a similar vehicle in Europe, which it introduced in 2008. The company manufactures the vehicle in both four-door sedan and hatchback models. Both versions of the Fiesta receive a maximum average gas mileage of 40 mpg on highways and feature a total of 98 cubic feet of interior space. The suggested starting price for the sedan was $13,320 as of October 2010, while the hatchback began at $15,120.
Japanese car company Honda introduced its compact, the Fit, in 2007. The 2010 Honda Fit (latest release as of October 2010) comes only in a four-door, hatchback model. The cost and overall value of the 2010 Fit led to it receiving a "Smartchoice" award from Intellichoice and was also listed on the "Top Ten Back-to-School Cars" from Kelley Bluebook. The vehicle receives an average of 33 mpg for city driving and has an overall interior volume of 91 cubic feet. The suggested starting price for the Fit was $14,900 as of October 2010.
