Fun Activities for the Elderly

Save

Many elderly individuals, who have long ago left behind the world of work, find themselves with extra time to fill. These aged citizens can pass this time more productively by gathering with others and engaging in organized activities. There is an array of activities ideal for these experienced individuals. By selecting one of these enjoyable, and potentially enriching, activities, you can help the elderly individual in your life better fill the extra hours in her day.

Cookie Decorating Party

  • Provide seniors in your area with a sweet leisure activity by throwing a cookie decorating party. To prepare for this party, bake up some sugar cookies in seasonally appropriate shapes. Prepare icing in an assortment of hues and gather edible decorations to place on the cookies. Invite a group of creative seniors to come and put their marks on these tasty treats. Eat some of the sugary creations and sell the rest at a bake sale, donating the profits to a charity or using them to fund your next cookie-decorating gathering.

Paint By Number Club

  • Even those that lack artistic skill can produce an aesthetically pleasing creation with paint-by-number. Elderly community individuals can turn the completion of this simple art task into an social activity through the formation of a paint by number club. To offer this enjoyable past-time to seniors in your area, purchase sets of paint by number projects and plan a weekly painting gathering. Give each participant one of these sets and gather them around them table, allowing them to mix and mingle while completing their projects.

After several weeks of paint-by-number meetings, hold a gallery showing, hanging the creations on the walls around your space and serving fanciful snacks and bubbly beverages to your paint-by-number artists.

Book Club

  • Many elderly individuals enjoy a good book. Encourage the senior citizens in your life to make time for reading by giving them a reading-themed social activity in which to engage. Set up a book club for your seniors. Pick a meeting place and date and select some reading material to feature. Allow your book club members' interests to guide your material selection by starting your first book club meeting with a poll. Each week serve snacks and gather elderly community members together to discuss their thoughts and feelings about their current reading material.

Nature Walk Flower Pressing Project

  • Encourage seniors to venture outdoors and into the fresh air by arranging a flower-gathering nature walk. Invite a group of elderly individuals to join you on this outdoor adventure. When seniors arrive, give each a basket. As these individuals walk around and socialize, encourage them to stop and pick some wild flowers. Ask the elderly flower-gatherers to take their collections home and place them between the pages of a heavy book, preserving their beauty.
