Plenty of reasons exist for hosting a house party, including birthdays, holidays, accomplishments, graduation, weddings, anniversaries or just the need to let loose and hang out with friends. No matter what the reason is for the party, you have a lot of options when it comes to awesome house party ideas. Do not just invite people over; take your party to the next level with different themes or other ideas to transform your house.
Costume parties are popular around Halloween, but you can host one any year. Ask people to dress up in a costume, or give guests more guidance with specific costume themes in mind. For example, everyone can dress from a specific decade, like the 1920s or 1980s. If you just bought a mid-century house, have everyone dress up in 1950s and '60s wear. Or, ask people to dress up as superheroes. Costumes allow people to express themselves and step out of their comfort zone. Some people extend the costume from what they are wearing to how they act, and actually play the part of the costume all night. They feel less reserved since they can hide behind a mask or outfit.
Ugly Sweater Party
An ugly sweater party is most popular in December during the Christmas and holiday season. The idea is simple: Ask everyone to wear the ugliest, most outrageous sweater they can find. This might involve a trip to the thrift shop or searching through old clothes boxes in storage or in an attic. Let people vote on which sweater is the ugliest and give out an award like a bottle of wine. The ugly sweaters are great ice breakers for conversations at your party and provide plenty of entertainment for guests.
Black Light Parties
Black light parties involve decorating your house with black lights, which serve as the main or only light source throughout the party. Instruct everyone to wear white, and decorate their outfits with highlighters or markers that show up under a black light. The party has a futuristic or outer-space feel, and people can get very creative with what they wear.
Naughty and Nice/Heaven and Hell
A naughty/nice or heaven/hell party allows people to show their true colors. Ask guests, "Deep down, are you an angel or a devil?" or "Are you naughty or nice?" Ask people to wear clothes that play the part: red or white, wings or horns, and so on. Decorate your house in heaven and hell themes. One room can be heaven, and one can be hell, or you can intermix the two throughout the party area.
