The emphasis of a dinner party is often the meal itself; however, with the addition of entertainment, party hosts can ensure that the pre- and post-dinner times are just as enjoyable as the meal itself. As you set about preparing your dinner party, take a pause from menu preparations and consider potential entertainment options. Select an entertainment option that fits with the type of party you are planning and that you feel would appeal to your guests.
Dinner Party Playlist
Set your event to music with a dinner party playlist. Create a playlist of songs that fit well with your planned meal on your computer. For example, if you're serving up a formal meal, consider a collection of classic songs. If you're hosting a barbecue with burgers and fries, create a Top 40 or country compilation. Play your prepared list as guests arrive and leave the tunes flowing through the meal. Delight your guests by burning copies of the songs on CDs and presenting them to them as they leave the event, allowing them to re-create the musical evening in their own homes.
Who Am I? Game
Start your dinner party with a mental challenge for your guests. Before guests arrive, obtain pictures of prominent individuals. When you are ready to begin the activity, place one of the images on the back of each guest. Allow guests to move about the room chit-chatting with friends. As they do so, instruct them to ask "yes" and "no" questions to work toward determining which individuals are pictured on their backs. Whoever solves the mystery first wins.
Dinner and a Movie
Make your event into an in-home dinner and movie gathering. Select a film to delight your guests after you eat dinner. As your meal draws to a close, gather guests in front of your television set and play your selected film. Serve up some drinks and desserts while guests view the feature. Try to select a film that fits with the general theme of your party. For example, if you're serving tropical food, select a film that features tropical scenes prominently throughout.
Entertain your guests by letting them show their culinary skills. Gather an assortment of common ingredients, and allow your guests to take turns crafting tasty treats out of the provided supplies. Create score cards, and ask other guests to rate the creations. Award an appropriate prize, such as a chef's hat, to the party guest who creates the most delicious dish.
