Give your country Christmas theme a big design boost by adorning an authentic wooden sled with charming old-fashioned decor. Choose from a variety of rustic-inspired embellishments, ranging from natural outdoor picks to vintage finds, to trim your sled. Display the decorated sled beside your front door to greet guests with a warm country welcome, or place it adjacent to an indoor fireplace to enhance the old-fashioned, cozy atmosphere.
Create old-time country appeal for your sled by decorating it with natural elements you find outdoors. Use craft wire to attach evergreen branches, pine cones, old grapevines, holly berries and even small abandoned bird nests to a plain wooden sled. Use hot glue to nestle petite animal figurines, such as hoot owls, red foxes, brown squirrels, white-tailed deer or field mice, among the natural greenery. Spray a dusting of artificial snow onto the sled for an authentic wintry effect. Tie multiple strands of natural raffia around the top of the sled to complete the down-home appeal with a casual straw-like bow.
Use an ordinary sled as a wintry backdrop to show off country-inspired accessories with an old-time Christmas flair. For example, tie a pair of vintage ice skates along with antique cowbells to your sled with perky red plaid ribbon made from wide strips of torn fabric. Fasten a few sprigs of silk ivy and frosted pine cones to the ice skates and cowbells with craft wire to increase the holiday effect. Or substitute antique children's toys, such as small metal trucks, traditional rag dolls or wooden spinning tops, for the ice skates and cowbells as fond reminders of days gone by.
Make your unadorned sled a sweet visual treat by adorning it with old-fashioned Christmas candies. Attach a quilted Christmas stocking to the top of the sled with an oversized tulle bow to set the stage for your country-inspired sweets. Fill the bottom of the stocking with polyester filler topped with old-fashioned treats, such as red-and-white striped peppermint sticks, candy canes and colorful lollipops, poking out of the stocking top. Hot glue the candy inside the stocking to keep it in place, and use craft wire to secure a faux evergreen branch next to the candy-filled stocking. Use hot glue to attach pieces of old-time striped ribbon candy and colorful hard candy in assorted shapes to the evergreen branch.
Add quaint country charm to a plain wooden sled with homemade decorations. For example, use red and green pieces of yarn to tie an arrangement of old night-light bulbs painted with glitter glue to the top of the sled. Add sprigs of holly berries to the bulb arrangement for a colorful touch of Christmastime greenery. Situate empty packages covered in traditional gift wrap dotted with motifs of old-fashioned Christmas trees, Santa Clauses, outdoor carolers or other vintage holiday images on top of the sled. Place strings of popcorn on top of the packages and sled to finish the charming decor.
