IRS Tax Hotline Questions
"Taxes and death"---a phrase that rings in the tax-payer's ears during tax season. Taxes often become stressful, tedious, and most importantly, confusing. Since 2002, the IRS has implemented a special group of Hotline toll-free numbers that individual tax payers and small businesses are allowed to call and ask questions. The hotlines are divided up into several groups; however, they cover a broad range of interests and topics, dedicated to making tax time an easier and more efficient time of the year.

Individuals
-
Several different IRS hotlines are applicable to individuals. The "IRS Tax Help Line for Individuals" covers questions concerning procedural information---as well as tax law information---and is the most general of the tax hotlines. The majority of questions and concerns regarding 1040 filing are directed to this hotline.
As electronic payment becomes more and more popular---due to the friendliness and ease of doing so---a hotline has been set up for payments regarding this subject. The "Electronic Federal Tax Payment System Hotline" is for any concerns related to the process of filing taxes through an electronic funds transfer.
Status and Extensions
-
As the happiest time of tax season is usually the end, people often want to ensure that it is over. The IRS does not notify people whether taxes have been filed correctly; therefore, for people interested in checking upon the status of their tax payments, the IRS hotline "Tele-Tax System" allows people to check the status of their payments and refunds. It works 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
The "Extension to File Tele-File System" hotline allows people to submit a tax extension for the 1040 tax form over the phone, making the process smoother and quicker than the traditional "mail-in only" method.
-
Businesses
-
Business taxes can be even more confusing than personal tax returns and although many businesses hire experts, there are still several business owners---especially small business owners---that file taxes themselves. For these people, the "Business and Specialty Tax Line" can answer questions and concerns regarding small businesses and trusts, as well as corporations. They cover questions pertaining to EINs, 94x returns, form 1065, as well as estate returns, among others.
