Fruit and vegetable activities for 4-and 5-year-old children include lesson plans that teach about different healthy foods. Teach children about the nutritional benefits of apples, carrots or other fruits and vegetables. Kids can decorate food, draw pictures of fruits or even grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Decorating Fruits and Vegetables
Give the kids whole apples, chopped celery, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and other fruits and vegetables on a plate with peanut butter. Help the kids make their own designs or faces on the apple by using toothpicks to attach tomatoes and other vegetables to the apples. Allow the children to eat their creations, but remind them to remove the toothpicks first.
Cut out large, thick slabs of fruit such as honeydew melons, watermelon and pineapple before class starts. Give each child small cookie cutters of various shapes, such as hearts, teddy bears or flowers. Place the fruit on a plate and help the kids cut out their own edible fruit shapes with cookie cutters. They can stack their shapes for fun or simply make shapes and eat them at the end of the lesson. Teach the kids about the importance of fruit in their diet. Show them which nutrients are contained in each type of fruit featured.
Create a lesson plan on how vegetables grow and what is needed for them to flourish. Give each child a pot with soil and help them plant their own seeds. You can choose small vegetables, such as peas or cherry tomatoes. Ask the children to draw pictures of the different growth stages of their vegetables. Put them on a windowsill or another sunny place. Make the kids responsible for watering their plants every day before class.
